Climbing at Road Runner Crag

An interesting and productive day spent at Plas y Brenin at the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award conference. My friends Si and Dave were both working at the centres, so during the lunch break we went down to the lake for a quick (5 mins) dip. Certainly freshened me up for the afternoon workshops!

I was back home just as Clare finished work. We were both a bit frazzled from taking on a lot of information, so we took a walk to the beach as it looked most likely to stay dry on the north coast.

It had been pouring with rain when I left Capel Curig, so the evening sun on the coast felt magic as we walked along the beach to Road Runner Crag.

There was a dark wall of cloud approaching, but we kept our fingers crossed that it would head out to sea rather than catch us up.

For a while it was touch and go. Neither of us had waterproofs!

We climbed the first two routes we got to, just in case the rain or darkness arrived quicker than anticipated.

Our luck was in. The routes were okay, but the noise from the trainline and A55 above is ever present at the crag. The squally rain headed out over Anglesey, leaving us with a splendid sunset and a fine walk home along the beach…
