What a glorious place to wake up! While camping in remote, wild and beautiful environments has its merits and attractions, every now and then, waking up under a crisp white duvet and enjoying a fresh cup of coffee in bed (in a proper cup!), while the morning sunlight pours through the floor to ceiling high windows, certainly hits the spot!

We had the luxury of a whole day until needing to get to the airport and the most marvellous place to relax in until then.

When lunch time came around, we returned to Joe’s Beer & Steak house for a second round. And as a bonus, while packing in the morning I came across a wad of bank notes in a trouser pocket that was more than enough for a Game Lasagna and another fillet steak!

The remainder of the bottle of Chardonnay was the perfect dessert and we decided best enjoyed from the cargo hammocks as this would provide the perfect place to enjoy a short nap afterwards!

I’ve never had such a relaxing start to a travel day! Our driver, Heinrich arrived at 15:30 as arranged, and by 16:30 we were checked in, through security and waiting at the gate.

Windhoek is not a busy airport, with only four flight departing, which made for a relatively chilled experience.

We took off at sunset and it was soon just pitch black below us, apart from the odd ring of flames from bush fires. With only half an hour in which to make our connecting flight to London Heathrow, there was a bit of tension in the air as we’d left Windhoek with a slight delay. We tucked into our delightful inflight meals and tried to relax.

When Johannesburg approached, the city lights seemed to stretch on forever. I had no idea how big the place is.

We didn’t run, but did walk at speed in order to get to the front of the security and passport queue before taking on the long distance trek across the massive airport. Boarding was just about complete as we arrived at the BA gate, but thankfully we’d made the connection. We were UK bound…
