Decided we ought to get a bit of leg fitness before embarking on the next phase of the summer adventures, so set out early into the Carneddau mountains opposite The Cottage. It was overcast which kept the temperatures down to pleasant hiking conditions.

Despite it being mid-summer, we didn’t see a soul as we wandered into the back of the Cwm, and below the cliffs of Llech Du. The Crib Lem spur is a super scramble, which can be made harder or easier as the mood dictates, as most of the difficulties can be skirted around if needed.

You also get a great view down and across to the big cliffs known as the Black Ladders. Sam an I had attempted to climb the central gully last summer and it was easy to see why we’d decided to back off it! A cliff best left to winter ascents when it’s al held together with snow and ice!

Soon enough we were crossing the ‘Christmas Tree’ slab as behind us, rain looked to be sweeping across Anglesey.

Shortly before the end of the scrambling section, the first few drops of rain began to fall. It all felt rather novel to be honest – I don’t think we’d been out feeling raindrops falling since sometime back in June!

It turned out only to be a couple of drops, so we pushed on to the summit of Carnedd Daffyd.

As we sat down to admire the views, the clouds suddenly blew in and the rain started again! We nestled down on the summit cairn and waited for it to pass before descending.

We followed the ridge over Mynydd Du, back to the meandering river below and back to Bethesda.

We called in at some friend’s new house on the way home, which in turn led to inviting them over for dinner as we’d already got others coming over that evening. Out of nowhere, we were suddenly hosting a little gathering at The Cottage. Great food, great fun, great company. A fine finish to a Sunday!
