Return of the Sunshine!

Hoorah! The sunshine is back and today felt a little bit like what a Greek Island climbing trip should be like. The sky has been so blue that it’s been almost impossible to believe that it was pouring with rain all day and into the night yesterday.

We went up to one of the ‘close to the road’ crags, and somehow managed to have a whole sector to ourselves. As we were getting the rope out, a big flock of birds all took off from the top of one of the high tops and circled around like starlings. Amazing to watch as we tried to guess what was going on.

When we left the cliff, we found over twenty other climbers just around the corner, but all day, we had this shorter section of cliff to ourselves.

Starting at the left hand side, we worked our way across the cliff face, climbing every single bolted route on it!

The grades were a little bit dubious, with some feeing harder and others much easier, but the rock was good and we climbed most routes on sight, without looking at what the grades were. Clare wasn’t able to lead climb yet, but was happy to be out on the rock in the sun at least!

There was a big cave near the end of the sector, which we explored a little way into…

There were some cool flow stone and other formations inside.

We got to the top of the final route just as the sun was starting to leave the valley. Perfect timing!

It was gone 15:30 at this point, and still plenty warm enough to be climbing ‘tops off’!

We didn’t rush away, and soaked up the last of the sunshine before the short walk back to the car.

In the evening, I got an email from the mapping App I use, with some interesting data in it. Every now and then, (when I remember), I try to record a GPS Track if we do a cycle or ski tour or unusual mountain hike. According to the data, and considering this is only the stuff I remembered to record, I’ve travelled an incredible 1423km on either bike, ski or foot! Even more astonishing is the 32km of ascent in only 83 recordings over the past 12 months!

After seeing this, I decided that perhaps it’s been okay to have been taking things easy in Greece this year and giving our bodies a bit of a rest. Turns out they’ve earned it! Ha ha! I think we’ll have a slow start on the sun terrace to celebrate tomorrow! 😀
