We awoke to a glorious blue sky day, and some fine cycling conditions greeted us as we left our Norwich town house residence – we had chosen our tour destination wisely!

We followed an old railway line out of the city, which was good at keeping us away from any traffic, but also meant that we found ourselves bypassing any interesting places. Soon after leaving Drayton, where we had stopped to pick up supplies, we left the railway and linked up quiet back roads northwards to the coast.

We passed by several small airfields and we peddled on. In the photo below you can see a small plane landing in the field right next to us! It felt very close!

We had a mid-morning break at the small church of Haveringland. It was unlocked and a sign encouraged us to take a look around (although we didn’t go up the tower). We couldn’t help being impressed that the old wooden pews all have had mini electric heaters installed under them!

Right on cue, a tiny village shop/cafe appeared, just as we could do with a rest. We fancied a hot drink inside a cosy little place and the village cafe of Itteringham, would have fitted the bill, but we actually chose to remain outside as the sun made a welcome appearance on our arrival and a sheltered table by the road created a nice little sun trap. A plentiful choice of fine cakes, pies and assorted arts and crafts could have had us staying there for hours, but there was still some uphill riding to be done.

Chestnuts were everywhere…

After reaching the dizzying heights of 90m at the summit of Bodham Hill, we enjoyed a few kilometres of freewheeling all the way down to Weyboune. After dropping the bags at our new accommodation, we continued for a final kilometre to where the road ended abruptly at the coast!

It was a calm evening and the light was good as the sun set behind us. We were both happy enough to sit on the beach and enjoy the views rather than strip off and dive in for a swim.

We were very pleased to have completed the days ride, arrived at the coast and to be sat on a new beach.

We stayed for about an hour, resting and recovering from the ride, then as the light began to fade, we cycled back into Weybourne, to find the pub!

With a glimpse of an old windmill on the way!

We were not sure if we were lucky or unlucky at the pub, as after enjoying a pint of local ale and contemplating a second, we were told that it was ‘quiz night’ and that every seat and table in the pub had been booked in advance! We declined the offer of sitting outside in the heated smokers pod and instead, cycled home, already feeing a little wobbly in the dark!

We had supplies to cook up a feast at the house, which is the perfect place to hunker down for a day (and only 300m from the pub!). A weather warning is in place for tomorrow, so we’ve decided to stay two nights. This way we get to enjoy a rest and let the storm pass!
