The Snowdon Horseshoe (above the clouds)

With thick mist and light drizzle falling at The Cottage, I somewhat ambitiously set out once again in the hopes of getting above the clouds. Leaving the van in the Llanberis Pass, I hitched up to Pen y Pass and set off upwards with fingers crossed.

Despite almost loosing the faith on the drive over, by the base of Crib Goch, I could feel the warmth of the sun nearby and knew I was going to be in for a special day.

At around 700m altitude, I broke through the top of the clouds and into another world… So many photos!…

Half way across Crib Goch, I bumped into my friend Sian, so we shared the experience of walking above the clouds together for a while, before I hurried onwards towards Snowdon summit for the second time in three days.

From the summit of Snowdon, the obvious choice was to continue onto Lliwidd for the full and classic ‘Snowdon Horseshoe’ route, so that I could stay up high for as long as possible.

At the col before the final climb up to Lliwidd, the cloud tops were virtually around my feet and a huge Broken Spectre walked with me the whole way along the ridge and at times another huge rainbow surrounded the smaller one. Absolute magic.

Such a special sight to see….

It’s been quite a few years since I last did the full horseshoe – and for good reason – it’s a really long way! My legs were beginning to tire as I descended the final peak. I took too many photos and kept stopping to try and take it all in….

Eventually, I had to descend into the clouds and suddenly the warmth of the sun as well as the view, was gone.

I hitched back to the van and drove straight to the lake where I dived straight off the pontoon to cool down, freshen up and to hopefully give my tired leg muscles a ‘warm down’ and reduce any stiffness for the next day!

A day for the memory banks….
