Rock Climbing at Rhoscolyn

It was pouring with rain at The Cottage, with low clouds obscuring the views during the morning. We were just settling into a day of indoor stuff when Clare checked the weather on the island and we could barely believe the contrast! We ‘dropped tools’ and dashed to the sunshine!

The contrasting weather was quite remarkable – just a 30minute drive away from The Cottage! The wind was blowing had and a good size swell was pushing big waves up the cliff fronts. In fact, our first choice of venue turned out to be soaking wet from the sea spray, so we continued on to a second headland, where we knew the climbs were higher up from the sea.

On the way, we explored a few little rocky zawns too…

The rock at the ‘Symphony Crack’ area is fantastic. With the sea booming just a short distance below us, it all felt rather exciting, even though we stared out on some of the easier routes in the area.

We climbed a couple of steeper lines too, which felt wild, with the sea frothing and foaming below!

By mid-afternoon, we were ready to get out of the wind go somewhere a little quieter, but were reluctant to leave the sunshine! A good compromise came with a cliff top walk back to Rhoscolyn, past the look out and finishing at The White Eagle pub!

Neil and his walking buddies had stopped here earlier in the month and had recommended it too us. We’d not been in ages, so got ourselves established on the sea view terrace and ordered a ‘few nibbles’….

After all that, we decided that we really ought finish off the im-promptu holiday day with a swim in the sea. By now the tide was out, but we found a sheltered(ish) spot for a quick dip. Not was warm as we’d hoped, but good for the soul!
