Coastal Climbing

After a morning of showcasing the world of Outdoor Education, there was just about time to take a small team of students on a rock climbing adventure.

This little buttress is situated near the north coast and has superb views from the belay ledge, some 18m up. (I did however neglect to take any photos on the route!). We climbed the two bolted pitches to the new lower off – which has been fitted with rings to abseil back from (just over 40m).

I lowered the first two students, and the rest went down on a stacked abseil. The rock on the route is pretty good, but be careful on the abseil as the fall line goes over some less solid bits – stand well back once you’re down!

Back home, we both decided that it might be prudent to conserve a little energy, even though the conditions are so good! We’ve been out late climbing almost every night for weeks, and a gradual fatigue is creeping in. So instead of racing another sunset up the local cliffs, we opted for a nice meal together and a more chilled night in – but with a short walk to the view point before bed…
