Climbing on Idwal Slabs

It’s been a swift transition from Norwegian winter to Welsh summer, but today’s walk uphill was at least done without the weight of skis and big boots on our feet. With the skis now packed away, it was time to get back out the ropes and rock climbing gear.

The base of the cliff (Idwal Slabs), was still in the shade, but by 10am it was already 18°C and very comfortable. Above the wall, was a rainbow arc somewhere up high.

With several guided parties either side of us, it was a fairly sociable ascent as we knew all the instructors working on the cliff.

We had no one else on our route, so could take our time and enjoy the views while getting the ropework sorted and familiar again.

We climbed the route ‘Charity’ in four pitches, practicing different belay set ups along the way.

It clouded over slightly during the day, but remained very warm. We had lunch on the main ledge at the top of the slabs, then chose to enters the day by climbing up the route ‘Lazarus’.

Having walked back down, we relaxed in the sunshine of Cwm Idwal and cooled off before walking back to the van.

After Cottage Coffees in the garden sunshine, and a freshen up, I spent the evening over in Anglesey doing some environmental and access training for climbers and instructor. Some new knowledge gained and a good social too. I even got to meet a genuine ‘Chuff’!
