The weather and snow conditions have meant that our plans have had to change again, but finally, we are off on a journey by Husky Sled. The morning was spent packing and preparing. There are not huts exactly where we planned to go, so are taking camping kit for some of the nights. My sleeping bag is enormous so I should be okay in the forecast -13°C nights.

Although I’m not sure about the sleeping mats – an actual reindeer skin!

With the sleds packed we were all assigned our dogs for the journey. We had to get to know them and harness them up. I’ve got a huge beast called Elvis in my team of four.

Amidst a huge noise of barking we finally set off from the kennels at 14:00.

The dogs don’t bark when they run, so all was soon quiet… kilometres slipped by as the afternoon passed.

We crossed a 15km lake where the wind chill was severe. Until then it had felt quite ‘warm’ at +1°C.

We reached a small village called Killinge. It was almost dark and we’d been on the move for nearly five hours without really stopping for more than a few moments to sort the dogs. They are sleeping outside tonight.

We are in a little basic cabin, but happily, the owner had got dinner waiting for us. It was moose stew. He proudly announced that he had hunted and killed it himself in the autumn! There was plenty of fat, bone and grizzle but it was pretty tasty.

As I brushed my teeth the northern lights put in another display. I took some poor photos, but those with better cameras have some beautiful ones!

Total Ride: 46.5km.
