Moel Famau (and it’s Frogs)

A new summit for me today! I was delighted to finally make an ascent of Moel Famau, having heard so much about it over the years. High winds and heavy rain have been washing over north wales, so I went east with my group to try and avoid the worst of it.

The forests in the lower slopes had been hit hard by the storms last month and big areas of the woods looked like a bomb had been dropped on them. Big trees had been snapped at half height.

The woodland provided some shelter from the rain and wind as we made our way up, but the big excitement came from the discovery of the frogs in the little pond!

There were loads!

And frogspawn…

Once above the tree line, we were exposed to the wind and rain again as various showers, downpours and rainbows passed by. In between the stinging rain, the views were actually quite far reaching.

The summit was fantastic! A genuine battle to stay upright!

After the summit ‘experience’ we huddled together in the lee of the ‘Jubilee Tower’ (or at least the remains of it). As we were preparing to descend, the skies briefly cleared!

Buffeted by the winds, but without any rain in our faces, the walk down was much more pleasant. Amazingly the temperature was around 13°C so we soon dried off.

Navigation was comically easy as well!

A fine day out in a new area and with okay(ish) weather!
