Snowcraft & Bushcraft

A mixed weekend of winter walking in the mountains, followed by spring-like conditions in the lower forests…

On Saturday, I took some students for a hike up into the snow. Perfect conditions to experience the winter wonderland, with great views, great snow and great company. A lovely day indeed…

We hiked into the Carneddau from where green grass, soon turned to white snow. There was only a thin covering lower down, but enough for a good sized snowman before we located some deep drifts near the peak of Gryn that we could climb up and slide down!

I’d taken a snow shovel, so we were able to dig into one of the bigger drifts and produced a reasonable sized snow-hole!

This soon became modified to a snow tunnel, which was also fun to slide through!

By contrast, the next day, I was in the forests near the coast, running an introduction to bushcraft session, where there was no trace of winter and the sun felt warm on our skin!

It was all rather relaxing after three big days out winter mountaineering! No rush, plenty of hot drinks and time to teach.

We also modified our cheese sandwiches to create some nice toasties!
