Sagres Surf Scenes

A day of rest spent enjoying some ‘surf spectating’ from the cliff tops at Sagres.

We toyed with the idea of hiring a board and if it had been a sunny blue sky day, I might have done. But a strong, cool wind was blowing and although some of the waves looked good I wasn’t really in the zone for getting in. A much better time was spent resting, watching the surfers and perusing to surf shops.

We’re saving the final few kilometres of westward riding until tomorrow. Partly because it’s really windy today and we don’t fancy having to peddle back again against its force and partly because it feels like we should arrive there with all our gear, rather than as day trippers. If there was a train line here, we’d be heading back to Faro tomorrow, but the line ends at Lagos, so we therefore need to cycle back there. Ideally, we’d do this over two days but it’s proving difficult to find any reasonable accommodation options, so we’ve decided to do it in a single push and get back to Lagos by tomorrow evening. It’s a decent way, with several ups and down, but most concerning is the headwind, which today would have been significant. Tomorrow is our window of opportunity though, as there is a brief ‘lull’ before it picks back up again. In preparation for a big day, we’ve made sure we’ve been well fed, watered and rested!

We stayed in town until after dark as the way back to our bed for the night was along a well protected cycle path. The lighthouse at ‘the end of the world’ was shining its bright light around by the time we got home.
