Everyone must have got to where they wanted to be for the start of the Bank Holiday, as the roads were (thankfully) clear as we drove down to Fort Martin on Saturday afternoon for a few days of fun with the family.

As always, the gardens were in full bloom and we enjoyed a walk around in the warm sunshine before pre-dinner drinks on the terrace.

Behind the scenes, there had been a lot of work going on in the Green House by mum!

The following day, we continued eastwards into the flatlands of Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and the Suffolk where we were hiked and played in the delightful English countryside while catching up the The Nipper and her crew.

The entertainment was first class, with lots of fun with the little dudes during the day and then fine dining in the ‘grand hall’ (with amazing wall paper!) in the evening.

Clare came out of retirement after some 20 years and more by dusting off her hockey stick (last used in Peru in 1997!) to give James a run for his money! There was also football in the park (involving two balls and interchangeable teams to keep things interesting), tree climbing, bike riding, ball catching and plenty of question answering! No one fancied driving anywhere and as there was so much to do in the garden and surrounding village, we happily stayed local.

A long way, but a fun visit! Now back to The Cottage for a night before my next expedition!…
