A Snorkel Safari

With a day that was forecast for blue skies and light winds, it seemed only right that we leave our climbing kit behind and head out on the coastal path in search of some secluded snorkelling bays.

We had hiked up to this col on our previous visit and after following several dusty paths, found a cool bay we called ‘Heron Bay’. This time, we were a bit more prepared, with food and water to sustain us on the hike. We passed the same tree up on the col and then picked up the faint path that runs around the whole peninsula.

There was a slight breeze on the sea, but the temperature was perfect for hiking…

We soon passed ‘Heron Bay’ choosing to continue on to what looked like on the map, further coves to be explored.

After only a few kilometres, we found just the kind of bay we were looking for and settled down to a waterside picnic.

The water was still ‘refreshing’, but we managed to stay in for quite a long time, swimming up and down the bay, exploring interesting rocks, watching fish and other strange underwater creatures. After a short snooze, we began our hike back along the coast, where we stopped again a a few other sites and snorkelled at length in the bigger bay as it was most sheltered.

All freshened up after dinner, we walked along the promenade before bed, by the light of the soon to be full moon and distant harbour.
