Climbing at Uzak Zűrafa, Datça

We started the day today with a stroll along the waterfront, then a hike up to the big cave of Can Baba. On the flanks of the steep tufa climbs in the cave, are plenty of slabbier routes that suit our style (and strength!) much better.

When we climbed here two years ago, the guidebook had only been in print for a month and we barely saw any other climbers during our stay. We had wondered if the place would be over run by now, but apart for the track though the forest being a bit less of a bush whack, it all seemed to be as we’d left it. We saw two other climbing teams during the day, but otherwise, it felt like we were alone in the valley. Judging by the amount of vegetation on the cliff, it certainly hasn’t seem much traffic yet.

The rock was just as sharp and grippy as we remembered! At this time of year, the shade is still, cool, but in the sun, the temperature was idyllic. Looking in our guidebook, we were here in April rather than March last time).

We climbed four long (35m) pitches, each of which was on fantastic rock, until our soft fingers, tired arms and sore toes demanded a rest! Happily we obliged and made our way back to the pad feeling suitably accomplished.

Here’s a few pictures to give you a feel of the scene…
