A Traverse of Tryfan

There looked to be a little bit of snow up on the higher summits, but not enough to get the winter kit out. In an attempt to maintain a little fitness in the legs after all the recent indoor climbing, I took a hike up and over Tryfan, taking the scrambling route up and over the North Ridge and then descending the South.

As I got higher, the temperatures got lower, until I came across some snow patches and iced up rocks. To avoid the slippery sections, I traversed under the final ridge section on slightly easier ground.

While the surrounding summits were generally capped with clouds, I had good visability throughout the morning.

After an hour and a quarter of steady movement, the final summit rocks suddenly appeared.

I climbed up on top of Adam and Eve (the twin summit rocks), made the jump between them , then settled down to enjoy a sandwich and the view. It was nice to have the summit to myself as I took in the surrounding vista which stretched all the way to the sea.

I was back home at The Cottage after traversing around to the car, which I’d left on the A5, in time for another lunch with Clare. Once she had finished work, the two of us decided that in the direct sunshine, it might be warm enough to go rock climbing in the Slate quarry (it certainly not rock climbing weather in the mountains!).

Sure enough, having chosen a cliff that was sheltered from the cold easterly wind and receiving plenty of sunshine, we climbed ‘Fresh Air’ – a favourite of ours.

One climb was enough. We could have done some more, but opted for a social instead, so returned to The Cottage to meet a friend who was passing by. An ‘active rest day’…..
