Had a physical and mental workout today on a journey though the Menai Straits.

It was great to be a student again today and be learning some new skills. I’ve done a bit of this before, but there was plenty to remember and learn.

We set off from Beaumaris with sails up and boats packed for the voyage. With time and tide on our side, we practiced tacking back and forth across the wind.

Wind and tide, meant that no actual paddling was required! Once we got the hang of getting the sails and Leeboards right, we could enjoy the view and let the wind do the work.

Just before lunch, we pulling onto an island for some lunch of cake and champagne! Why rough it!?

Invigorated by the sugar and rest, we got back in the flow and heading through the bridges at nearly 10km/h!

A real joy!

At Plas Newydd, the wind dropped but we continued on with the tide. We paddled from here to make sure we made it to Felinheli before the tide turned!

We made it with about ten minutes to spare!

Once the boats were sorted, we went across the road to warm up by the fire in the welcome warmth of the pub!

A brilliant day of learning, with some excellent instructor! Good chat, great knowledge and even better company.

Around the table with drinks in hand, my arms, brain and eyelids felt heavy!…
